Reaching Out to Those in Need Through Cash-for-Work Projects

“Bread for all People”, an organization of the Archdiocese of Bamberg, Germany, had organized a symposium with the theme: “You go, give them something to eat” in September 2019. Fr. Klaus Vaethroeder, the Mission Procurator of Jesuit Mission Germany, asked me to make a presentation. I shared two personal experiences, one positive and one negative, about my hostel students in India. These two experiences made me end my presentation with the phrase: “The really poor are people of dignity; do not make them into beggars”. This phrase was well accepted by the organizers. In the last Richie’s Letters (August 2021),

Staying “Positive”: A Story of Resilience and Inspiration

Rumi, 14 years old, is a Grade 9 student at Xavier Jesuit School. (It is not her real name.) She lives with her parents, grandparents, and a younger sister in Phnom Bak Village. Her parents make a living by selling food at Teuk Thla Market, which is about five minutes away from school by motorcycle. In mid-August, news came that all vendors of that market must take swab tests because one person from that marketplace tested positive. Out of 505 people who were tested, 126 came out as positive, and among them were the members of Rumi’s family. Days before

In Everything, Love and Serve the Lord (video clip)

Last June 28th, four of our students, Kong Kimheng, Chandy Yury, Cheay Dane, and Chhunly Nisa, took part in the opening program of II Colloquium-JESEDU Global 2021, led by Jesuit Asia Pacific Conference (JCAP). The XJS Choir’s month-long training was done under the guidance of Ms. Katherine Cheung and Ms. Jungsoo Huh. Participating in a virtual choir was quite new for the students. Initially, they found it challenging to hit the right notes while smiling in front of the camera. Dane, Grade 9, shared that she was so nervous to sing in front of the camera. She said, “It’s my

One Small Step For Fe y Alegría Teachers

“Brother, can we reschedule the workshop to another day when teacher Katherine* comes back from holiday?”– “I’m sorry, teachers, but you know she won’t be back for at least a month. We don’t need to worry.”“But how can we teach other teachers? They are much older and more experienced than we are. We don’t feel confident.”– “How can you say that? All of you are teachers at Xavier Jesuit School! I’m confident that our teachers have good things to share with other teachers.” This was me talking to our teachers in a meeting to prepare our very first online teacher-training

The New Banteay Prieb is…

On March 26, 2021, there was a simple Cambodian cultural ceremony at the New Banteay Prieb (Banteay Prieb Thmey) to mark the beginning of our new project at our new location. We had to move out from the previous location due to the Cambodian government’s sudden decision to take back the land it had given to Banteay Prieb in 1991 where we ran a vocational training program. The government had its own plans to develop this piece of land to support the disabled community in Cambodia. This decision caused us to stop our vocational training program at Banteay Prieb abruptly.

Twelve Weeks Journey with Ignatius

I had a twelve-week-long “Journey with Ignatius” through Zoom together with other candidates for Jesuit Vocation in Cambodia mission. This program, produced by Boston College, Institute for Advanced Jesuit Studies, showed the pilgrim journey of St. Ignatius, introducing one place in the journey of Ignatius and a theme for us to reflect on each week. We made a journey along the footsteps of Ignatius through Arevalo, Pamplona, Loyola, Olatz, Aranzasu, Monserrat, Manresa, Jerusalem, Barcelona, Paris, Venice, and finally to Rome. In each week, we had prayers and sharing regarding various themes such as formation, disruption, conversion, departure, the unexpected, solitude,
